The Lal Bazaar’s narrow lanes have been a market continuously for two centuries, the Kasar Devi temple drew 1960s counterculture figures (Bob Dylan, Timothy Leary, Lama Anagarika Govinda meditated here), and the surrounding Kumaun villages are some of the most picturesque in Uttarakhand.
Day trips: Jageshwar Dham (124 ancient stone temples), Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary (Himalayan views, leopard country), Chaukori (sunrise views of Panchachuli peaks). Most travellers pair Almora with Nainital and Kainchi Dham for a 5-6 day Kumaun circuit.
