Badrinath

The northernmost of the four Char Dham shrines and one of the 108 Divya Desams of Vishnu — a black Saligram stone idol in a temple at 3,300 m.

Badrinath, the northernmost Char Dham shrine, is unusual in being on the Vaishnav pilgrim circuit too — it’s one of the 108 Divya Desams of Vishnu and the most important pilgrimage temple in north India for Vaishnavas.

The temple’s black Saligram-stone idol of Badrinarayan is reputed to be installed by Adi Shankara in the 8th century. The Tapt Kund hot spring at the temple entrance is traditionally where pilgrims bathe before darshan. Mana Village, 3 km north, is the last inhabited Indian settlement before the Tibet border — a frequent add-on.

Badrinath is the most accessible Char Dham shrine by road. Temple opens late April / early May and closes around Vijayadashami.
