Gangotri temple beside snowmelt Bhagirathi river

✦ Uttarakhand

Gangotri

Source of the holy Ganga, reachable by road. The 18th-century Gangotri temple stands above the Bhagirathi, with Gangotri glacier 18 km further upstream.

Gangotri is the most accessible of the Char Dham shrines — reachable by road, no trek required. The 18th-century temple sits beside the Bhagirathi river (the official source-stream of the Ganga; the Alaknanda joins it later at Devprayag).

The glacier itself, Gaumukh, is 18 km upstream — a permit-only trek of 1-2 days that’s not part of standard Char Dham packages but available as an add-on for trekking enthusiasts. The temple opens with Akshaya Tritiya and closes around Bhai Dooj.
