Mount Kailash

The 6,638 m mountain considered the most sacred peak in Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Bon traditions. The 52 km parikrama is one of the world's most demanding pilgrimages.

Mount Kailash — 6,638 m — is unique among Himalayan peaks for being the most sacred and yet, by religious tradition, unclimbed. The four-faceted pyramid is the axis-mundi for Hindus (Shiva’s abode), Buddhists (Demchok’s residence), Jains (where Rishabhanatha attained liberation), and Bon practitioners.

The 52 km parikrama (circumambulation) is the central act of the pilgrimage. Done over 3 days at altitudes between 4,750 m and 5,630 m, it’s one of the world’s most demanding religious treks. Most pilgrims use yaks/ponies for the harder sections.

Reaching Kailash requires Inner Line Permits and Chinese visas — see our Kailash Mansarovar package for the full logistics.
