Ladakh landscape with monastery and high desert

✦ Ladakh

Leh Ladakh

India's high-altitude cold desert — Buddhist monasteries, turquoise lakes, the world's highest motorable passes, and a culture that feels closer to Tibet than Delhi.

Leh — the capital of Ladakh at 3,500 m — is the gateway to a region that feels nothing like the rest of India. The Buddhist monastery culture (Hemis, Thiksey, Diskit), the cold desert landscapes of Nubra, and Pangong Tso’s improbable turquoise water are the headlines.

Most travellers fly in to Leh (challenging — direct altitude jump) or drive in from Srinagar over Zojila Pass (recommended — gradual acclimatisation). The road circuit takes 9 days; the fly-in version 6-7. Either way, Day 4 in Leh is a non-negotiable rest day for altitude.

Our Ladakh Scenic Circuit starts and ends in Srinagar — the most scenic, safest acclimatisation route.
