Lake Mansarovar

The 4,590 m freshwater lake at the foot of Mount Kailash — said to be the highest freshwater lake in the world and the original source of four major rivers.

Lake Mansarovar — at 4,590 m, often called the world’s highest freshwater lake — sits 30 km from Mount Kailash. The 88 km lake is reputed to be the source-region of four major rivers (Brahmaputra, Indus, Sutlej, and the Karnali — the longest source-stream of the Ganga).

For Hindu pilgrims, taking a dip in Mansarovar and circumambulating the lake (vehicle-supported, 88 km) is paired with the Kailash parikrama. The pre-dawn puja, the lake’s perfect mirror reflection of Kailash on still mornings, and the silence of the high desert make it one of the most sacred spaces on earth.
