Pahalgam Lidder river valley with conifer slopes

Pahalgam

South Kashmir's prettiest valley — the Lidder river, Aru Valley, Betaab Valley, and the traditional base for the Amarnath Yatra.

Pahalgam — “Valley of Shepherds” — sits in southern Kashmir at the confluence of the Lidder river and Sheshnag stream. It’s the most photographed Kashmiri valley after Srinagar, made famous by Bollywood (the original Betaab Valley scenes), trout fishing on the Lidder, and as the traditional base for the Amarnath Yatra.

Most Kashmir tours include 1-2 nights in Pahalgam — Aru Valley (24 km away, meadow walks) and Betaab Valley (5 km, accessible by car) are the standard day trips. From late June through August, Pahalgam transforms into the staging area for the Amarnath Yatra (the traditional Pahalgam route to the cave shrine).
