Pilgrim path winding up to Yamunotri shrine in Garhwal Himalayas

✦ Uttarakhand

Yamunotri

The source of the Yamuna river — the westernmost of the four Char Dham shrines. A 6 km trek (or pony) brings pilgrims to the temple at 3,293 m.

The Yamuna river originates at the Yamunotri glacier — and pilgrims trek 6 km from Janki Chatti to reach the temple at 3,293 m. The shrine opens on Akshaya Tritiya (late April / early May) and closes around Diwali.

The trek is physical but accessible by pony or palki. Surya Kund — the hot spring at the temple — is where pilgrims traditionally cook rice in muslin cloth as prasad. Yamunotri is one of the four Char Dham shrines and is included in every full Char Dham yatra package.
